The story coming into Speedweeks 2014 has been the return of the 3 car. The number hasn't been used since Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. But now it's back with Austin Dillon behind the wheel. And it's back in a big way.

Dillon laid down a lap of 196.019 mph to win the pole for the Daytona 500. Martin Truex Jr. will start to the outside of Dillon thanks to his lap of 195.852 mph.

Everybody knows that single-car qualifying on a restrictor-plate race track is more about the car than the driver. Dillon kept trying to make sure everybody knew how hard his Richard Childress Racing team worked for this.

"I feel like this is all for the guys at RCR," he said. "They brought the house down here. Our engine has been really good since we have been here. I just had to hit my shifts then I knew I could hold the wheel straight for two laps."

Dillon's speed shouldn't have come as a surprise to anybody. Dillon's 3 car was one of the fastest cars at Daytona preseason testing a month ago and he was very fast in both practice sessions for qualifying as well. And he wasn't the only fast RCR car. Ryan Newman qualified fifth, Paul Menard 10th, and Brian Scott12th. And Truex has a RCR engine under the hood of his Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet.

Now that the front row for the Daytona 500 has been set all attention gets turned to Thursday night's Budweiser Duels to set the remainder of the starting lineup.
