Another race weekend of Mother Nature versus NASCAR. It was looking like weather could push the race to Monday but the skies cleared out and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hit the track at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Denny Hamlin would lead the field to green but Brad Keselowski would take the lead but Matt Kenseth would take the lead heading into the caution. There was trouble on pit road for Jeff Gordon who had some damage after a collision with David Ragan.
The field would go back to green but Alex Bowman’s battery fell out of his car and caused some havoc on track as it broke apart.
Jimmie Johnson who took just two tires on the competition caution would shred his right side tires and was forced to hit pit road under green.
The field would hit pit road though for a rain shower and the red flag would be displayed for rain on lap 124.
NASCAR was determined to get this race going under the lights and with a lot of hard work on the track the field went back to racing.
On lap 156, Danica Patrick and Cole Whitt got together which set off a chain reaction wreck involving second place driver, Kenseth got ran into by Timmy Hill who was trying to slow down.
Tire wear was an issue for some drivers and the transition from day to night. Kenseth who had major backend damage drove his way from 29th to battling for second by halfway.
Kyle Busch was battling for the lead but would hit pit road under green. Caution waved on lap 277, right after for Ryan Truex who hit wall after a tire blew.
The field would hit pit road for fuel, tires and adjustments. The field would take the green flag and Kenseth would quickly take back the lead.
Caution would wave when David Ragan and Michael McDowell made contact. The leaders hit pit road but Kenseth only took two tires and fuel. He would maintain his lead but rookie Kyle Larson would take off on the restart and keep pace with Kenseth in second.
Caution waved on lap 395 when Ky. Busch spun just as green flag stops were about to start. Kevin Harvick would take the lead off of pit road along with Carl Edwards.
With less than 50 laps to go Harvick was battling Larson when engine issues sent him into the wall. Jamie McMurray hit Harvick from behind and collected Brad Keselowski.
McMurray would head to garage but Keselowski would continue on even with missing his hood.
Some of the leaders stayed out including Edwards who on the restart was able pull away until caution waved for rain.
The race would end under caution and Edwards would be declared the winner.
The rest of the top 10 were Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Aric Almirola, Tony Stewart, Marcos Ambrose, Denny Hamlin, Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers and Larson.
