James Buescher of Turner Motorsports went from eleventh to first from turn four to the finish line to win the Drive4COPD 300 at Daytona. Buescher had to avoid a massive wreck in the final turn to win the race.
Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Tony Stewart, Trevor Bayne and more were involved in the wreck in turn four. The wreck started when Logano and Bayne were on the outside trying to pass the Busch brothers. Stewart got a run on Bayne who went to block Stewart, squeezing him into the wall. Stewart then spun into Kurt Busch who then spun Logano into Stenhouse who then spun Kyle Busch head-on into the wall. Buescher had to go below the yellow line and weave his way through the wreck to win the race.
Brad Keselowski finished second, Elliott Sadler finished third, Austin Dillon finished fourth, and Tayler Malsam finished fifth.
Danica Patrick led the field to green from the pole position, but that would be the highlight of her day. Patrick was spun out in turn three around lap 50 when her teammate Cole Whitt tried to hook up in tandem with her, but instead spun her around. Patrick went head-on into the wall in turn three. She was able to finish the race but was many laps down.
The race saw a hybrid-style of drafting. It was a mix of traditional pack racing as well as the tandem drafting that we saw last season at Daytona and Talladega. The race was clean throughout most of it, but it got crazy with about 25 laps remaining. First there was a 19-car wreck that resulted in a red-flag to repair the SAFER Barrier in turn four when Kenny Wallace's splitter got stuck in the wall. Then with six laps remaining there was a four car wreck, and then there was the 14-car crash coming out of turn four on the final lap.
