When you come to Texas, you think football and the cowboys. NASCAR fans think of Texas Motor Speedway. On Sunday the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers will hit the track for 500 miles.
Sunday should be one of Roush Fenway’s best chances to win, because at TMS they dominate. The race last spring was Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards race to lose. Neither of them was in victory lane, as pit road miscues cost them a chance at the win.
Edwards has solid numbers at the track, with an average finish of 16th and an average start of 17th. Edwards has not led more than nine laps since 2008. After a rough start this season, Edwards is looking to continue his climb up the standings.
Biffle is another driver to watch on Sunday. He had a solid car all day in practice on Friday and a solid qualifying lap. His numbers at TMS don’t show it but he has run well. He has an average finish of 19th and an average start of 15.7.
This weekend though I expect him to be up front and challenging for the lead. With a strong start this season and only having one finish outside the top 10, Biffle will be in the mix all day long.
Another driver to watch is Jeff Gordon. TMS has not always been Gordon’s best track, but in recent years the team has been making ground. They won the spring race after taking advantage of Edwards pit road miscues.
Gordon has missed two chances at race wins in the last two weeks; Gordon is tired of coming in second so he is hungry to get back into victory lane.
Sunday Mother Nature could play havoc on the race. There is a potential for rain early but we could see clearing. The crew chief’s will still have to race like were running to half way and then take it from there.
Another factor is none of these teams have really run the car in packs with new spoiler. At the Charlotte Motor Speedway test earlier this season we saw mostly single car runs. Even Friday teams were focused on qualifying.
With both the practices on Saturday were rained out this means teams won’t really know how the cars will handle side by side with the new spoiler. That was something all the teams were hoping for some practice.
The team that can use the notes from CMS test and what they learned Friday will be the one to beat on Sunday.
