News and Notes: Phoenix International Raceway
Much of this week and most of last weekend races at Texas Motor Speedway revolved around Kyle Busch and the will he and won’t they conversation of his future at Joe Gibbs Racing. Meanwhile, there was an actual race going on Sunday at TMS and Tony Stewart out gunned and out ran Carl Edwards to narrow the points lead down to just three points.
Yes, you read that correctly with just two races left in the season the points gap is three points. This two man race heads into Phoenix International Raceway where there are far more questions heading into this race than there was at Talladega.
The new pavement is slick and there is only one good groove according to the drivers who participated in the open test and the Nationwide series practices on Thursday, these races this weekend could see the points change drastically for both.
PIR has attempted to “age” the track by using a tire dragger to widen the groove. Also, they had driver’s education classes use the track to lay some rubber down.
Still, following the NNS practice on Thursday drivers were still nervous. Aric Almirola said "No! Outside that one lane, it's pretty slick."
With the NASCAR Sprint Cup series and NNS getting on track today, many drivers hopes is there will be improvement for the racing this weekend.
For those drivers in the title hunt this weekend’s races at PIR have become the largest “X” factor of the season.
It was announced Friday morning that First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will serve as Grand Marshalls at Homestead Miami Speedway next weekend.They will be promoting the Joining Forces Initiatives.
Jeff Gordon was named the third quarter National Motorsports Press Association’s Speedway Motorsports Spirit Award.
The award recognizes a driver and their contributions to motorsports.
Gordon spent the last off weekend of the season in July in the Congo. He will be returning to Africa during the off season to continue his foundations work.
Elliott Sadler and his wife Amanda, welcomed their second child on Monday morning. Austyn Rose Sadler. This is the couple’s second child, as Austyn will join her big brother Wyatt. Mother and baby are all doing well.
