Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Makes Incredible Comeback to Win in Kansas
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. got his sixth win of the year in the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway, but midway through the race, he probably would have been happy just to finish on the lead lap.
Stenhouse made hard contact with Joey Logano exiting turn four midway through the race. Both got into the wall and Stenhouse was left with a lot of damage on the right rear of the car. Logano fell down one lap and Stenhouse fell two laps down. They had to hope that there would be enough cautions to help them at least get back on the lead lap.
They got their cautions and more.
Stenhouse was able to take the free pass and the lucky dog, as was Logano.
Stenhouse pitted with about 25 laps to go to ensure that he could make it to end on fuel. That was a good choice considering many drivers ran out of fuel during the final caution.
Kyle Busch was leading with Paul Menard chasing him down when Hal Martin and Scott Lagasse Jr. crashed in turn two with three laps to go. Both crashed very hard requiring a lengthy caution to clean up all the debris.
Elliott Sadler, Austin Dillon and Danica Patrick all had to pit from the top-10 to ensure they could make it to the end.
Sam Hornish Jr. then ran out of gas on the backstretch when the field was coming to take the green, so NASCAR extended the caution an extra lap. That resulted in Menard running out of gas just as the field took the green flag.
Busch, Stenhouse, Logano and Dillon escaped to try to battle for the win.
Stenhouse probably wasn't close enough to get Busch unless Busch faultered. Which he did. Busch was shaking the car to try to get enough fuel to the engine to make it to the finish, but he ran out in turn three. Stenhouse got by and went onto the win.
Logano got nipped at the line by Dillon for second.
The race saw 12 cautions for a total of 50 caution laps.
Brian Scott amounted for three of those cautions. He spun out three times, without help from anyone each time.
There were 14 lead changes among six different leaders.
14 cars finished on the lead lap.
